One of the benefits of planting native flowers in your garden is the many visitors they will receive. From bees to bunnies, the plants provide food and shelter to different critters. Over the past few months, we found some neat insects visiting our prairies.
This video shows a hummingbird moth on a bee balm flower. Bee balm flowers are one of their main food sources, along with verbena and honeysuckle
Unfortunately, we found this sphinx moth lying on the ground by the purple coneflowers. They can fly up to 30 mph and hover by flowers, resembling hummingbirds.
On this yellow coneflower, a jagged ambush bug is resting. It is known as a “true bug,” as opposed to a beetle.
Of course, our flowers have honeybees, grasshoppers, and inchworms (left to right). All are important pollinators that are common to the area.
