Seed Packet Information

A collection of Midwestern Rewilding seed packets

Each seed packet contains more than 30 native seeds collected in the Midwestern area. They are all able to be scatter-seeded; however, growing instructions may vary.

Scatter Seeding

Scatter Seeding Tutorial

The easiest way to grow native plants is by scatter seeding. Just like the name, all you need to do is scatter the seeds across the area you would like to re-wild. While they will take a couple years to become large plants, hopefully they will grow into buds within the year.

The best time to scatter seed is in the late fall or early winter—in any weather! Scatter seeding works later in the year as well, even towards the end of spring.

Growing the packets from seed

Another way to grow native plants is by indoor seed starting: sowing the seeds in starting soil with grow lights. This method has high yield, but is much more labor and energy intensive. Each type of flower has specific sowing instructions, which can be found in the native plants information section. Notably, the only plant that we distribute right now that does not need stratification is Bee Balm. Stratification is a process of roughing up the seeds by leaving them in damp sand in the winter. At this point in the year, it is too late to do so.
