Two weeks ago (on the 25th of February), I made a second trip to Longfellow Elementary. This time, the process was more streamlined: I was able to help three classes within less time. The first two classes were third graders and the last class was made up of second graders. The students were just as excited to plant the seeds as the first trip: they kept approaching me with their pots to ask “Ms Annika, does this look right?”

This week, I also received an update on the seeds. Many of the pots have sprouted into little seedlings. It appears that the bee balm was more successful than the purple coneflower.

Additionally, the teachers had decided to use compostable pots (as opposed to plastic), which are susceptible to mold. We found that the teachers that used the lids during germination were more likely to grow mold on the pots. Therefore, while the lids are helpful for germination, it may be best to keep them off when using compostable pots.
