I had the opportunity to educate two wonderful classes of Longfellow/Pinewood Elementary students about the importance of native plants!

First, I presented a talk to the students, defining what native plants are, highlighting what their importance is, and explaining their part. They had many delightful questions, like “which plants do monarchs eat most?” The students were excited to tell me about their connections to plants as well, sharing many wholesome anecdotes.

Then, I assisted them with sowing seeds in compostable pots. They needed to put the proper amount of soil in the pots and sow the seeds at the proper depth. The students got to choose between bee balm and purple coneflower, both of which are native wildflowers that are easy to germinate.

Once the plants grow and the weather warms up, the seedlings will be planted behind their playground to start the growth of a native prairie. Hopefully, I will get to help the students plant their seedlings in the ground once spring comes.

I can’t wait to see these flowers bloom and help two more classes next Tuesday!
